OH MY GOSH
"I have opinions of my own, strong opinions, but I don't always agree with them"
- George H.W. Bush
Let’s take a moment to talk about this. I mean, because first off, “Tell cars not to hit kids.” Well, yeah, we do that all the fucking time, idiot. Ever seen signs like these?
We have classes and signs and laws about it, and people are constantly reminded. So your argument only works if we put up signs everywhere reminding assholes not to rape. But you’d rather talk about how rape victims have it coming to them.
But the dumbest part of this crap? Roads exist for cars to drive on. Children need to be careful to cross the street because they’re entering into an environment that exists specifically for something that is dangerous to them. The only way this shit is a valid comparison is if you think that bars, parties, and the world in general exists specifically for men to have sex with women. And I gotta break it to the guys who support this stupidity- your dicks are not that important. So knock off this bullshit and stop excusing rapists.

ELLE spain has very bravely run an issue with this super fat plus size model on the cover if you guys want to pat them on the back. don’t you feel represented?
the ELLE article is called ‘the success of the real woman,’ and i linked this igigi blog post because, while they do engage in the yawn-worthy ‘calling fat women REAL WOMEN is THIN SHAMING’ rhetoric*, they make a better point about how problematic the term “real woman” is when you apply it to a woman who is photoshopped to the point of utter unattainability to a person who exists in 3D.
is this cover like, even progressive in any way? how many of us would even know this woman was “plus sized” if no one told us?
* the problematic phrase “real women have curves” is something that sprouted up as a response to fatphobia and a lack of representation of fat bodies; while this may hurt the feelings of thin women, that is basically the misandry to fatphobia’s misogyny (aka not an institutionalized form of discrimination, but rather an annoyance that might make you feel cruddy). body policing sucks, and it sucks when people criticize or denigrate thin bodies, but having to make every single conversation about fatphobia into a conversation about thin peoples’ feelings/’all bodies’ is really fucking tedious.
While the phase “real women have curves” is problematic, I really think that we need to unpack it a little bit more. While there are a lot of fat women who say it without acknowledging the wide range of issues that they are helping to perpetuate, we need to think about who that phrase actually applies to.
I’m hesitant to say that the phrase was only created to serve as backlash to fat stigma, even if it is used in that manner. In reality it is a hetero male gaze in action as a way to police bodies, which people are too quick to assume fat women are part of. I don’t know how many times I have heard fat phobes tell a fat person that they don’t have curves. So this backlash against fat positive spaces or just fat people in general for a phrase that they are often denied access to is problematic, short sighted and in a lot of ways just plain ignorant.
If we unpack the idea behind the phrase “real women have curves” we have to not only look at very thin women who are told they don’t have curves but also to fat women who are told they don’t either. You shouldn’t be surprise to see the lack of diversity in the body types that are “acceptably curvy” when this phrase is deployed outside of fat spaces, as they are still often quite thin. Furthermore, the context of being a “real woman” is also transmisogynistic implying the “realness” of a body type and not relying on someone’s self identification of their own gender. In reality the phrase is about controlling women’s bodies and the expectation that they conform to white heteronormative beauty ideals.
Sorry for mildly going off topic from the original post.
I would like to summarise the above comment and emphasise that when most people talk about ‘curves’ they mean the right kind of curves - you know, innie outie, smooth, hourglass shape curves. They don’t mean big round belly, cellulite and wobbly fat - and when straight cis men use the phrase ‘real women have curves’ in relation to genuinely fat woman, chances are they’re fetishising them anyway. However problematic the phrase ‘real women’ is, I think we can all agree that cis men should not be using it. Dude, your view of what a ‘real woman’ is is not a compliment.

"So, yes, for the fucking love of God, movies matter. TV shows matter. Novels matter. They shape the lens through which you see the world. The very fact that you don’t think they matter, that even right now you’re still resisting the idea, is what makes all of this so dangerous to you — you watch movies so you can turn off your brain and let your guard down. But while your guard is down, you’re letting them jack directly into that part of your brain that creates your mythology. If you think about it, it’s an awesome responsibility on the part of the storyteller. And you’re comfortable handing that responsibility over to Michael Bay."
